Frequently Asked Questions
problem before recommending a law firm?
particular law firms?
co-counsel together with the selected firm?
problem, how long will it take you to recommend an attorney?
Is Legion Counsel a referral service?
No. Unlike Legion Counsel, a referral service merely provides you with a list of lawyers who have signed up and paid for the privilege of the refferal. You do not talk to a lawyer and no personal contact exists between the agency and the listed attorneys. There is no continuation of service after the referral and there is typically little or no follow-up.
What services do you provide?
Our services are more fully described in the Services Provided section. Basically, we will identify the best law firm match for you. If you choose to retain the recommended firm we will continue on as co-counsel for a designated period to oversee the firm's performance and billing.
Are your services really provided free of cost to the client?
Yes. Our compensation is paid directly by the selected law firm, without any increase in their usual and customary fees, which is forbidden by ethics rules. Fee-splitting between law firms is an accepted practice. *
What if I don't have the money to pay for the lawyer you recommend?
Certain kinds of cases like personal injury or medical malpratice are usually accepted on a "contingency" basis. This means the lawyer will not charge you up front, but instead will take a percentage of any settlement or jury verdict. In other casese, like divorce or bankruptcy, the lawyer will expect to be paid on an hourly or flat fee basis, and will usually ask for some amount of up front payment. If you don't have the money to pay an attorney, and if your case is not of contingency variety, please refer to our "Other Resources" section.
What will the selected firm charge me?
This will depend upon the type of claim and extent of services rendered to you. Please refer to the "Attorney Fees Information" section.
Do you really know all the lawyers in the community? Not every one, but certainly many. However, we have personal contact with every attorney prior to their recommendation and we will confirm their reputation with other attorneys in the area.
Will you give me your legal opinion concerning my claim or problem before recommending a law firm?
We will give you some insight into the merits of your case. However,we will defer to the selected firm to provide you with specific legal advice. Be assured, though, that we won't even proceed unless your case is considered to be worthwhile.
What information will you use in deciding which attorney you recommend to me?
Our recommendation will include, among other things, personal details; education; years in practice; credentials and ratings; malpractice insurance coverage; State Bar check; any published verdicts and settlements; and reputation in the legal community.
Does Legion Counsel have any commitments to recommend particular law firms?
No. We make our selection of firms strictly based upon their merit and suitability for your needs.
How long will Legion Counsel continue as my guardian co-counsel together with the selected firm?
Our period of service as co-counsel is intended to ensure that the selected attorney is the right choice and will perform capably. It will also depend upon the nature and magnitude of your legal need. It can therefore range from a minimum of sixty days to as long as it takes to resolve the matter.
Do you handle every kind of case requiring legal representation?
Yes and no. Yes, no matter what area of the law is involved (see the Areas of Practice section), we are prepared to find a qualified attorney and provide our co-counsel oversight services. Regrettably though, we cannot assist those people unable to pay for a selected attorney's services, unless they have a claim for significant damages, with the legal fee to be derived from a percentage of the recovery.
After you obtain necessary information regarding my claim or problem, how long will it take you to recommend an attorney?
We would expect to assess those firms successfully handling similar matters, discreetly contact the preferred one without revealing your identity, determine the firm's availability, and make our recommendation to you within a few days.
* Any sharing of fees between Legion Counsel and the selected attorney is subject to client approval after written disclosure of the terms of such fee sharing, and in compliance with any other ethical obligations under California law.
